Get the Perfect Slice from Your Downriver Cake

Your cake was made to be enjoyed and shared! Proper cutting and serving will help you get clean, attractive slices and the maximum number of servings from your Downriver Cakes creation.

Whether you’re celebrating a birthday, anniversary, graduation, holiday, or another special occasion, follow these simple tips when it’s time to serve your cake.

What You’ll Need

For easier, cleaner cake cutting, we recommend having:

  • A long, sharp cake or kitchen knife
  • A container of warm or hot water
  • Clean paper towels
  • Cake plates and serving utensils
  • Wax or parchment paper if slices will be stored

For Clean, Beautiful Slices

Before making your first cut, dip your knife into warm or hot water and carefully wipe it dry with a clean paper towel.

Make a firm, straight cut completely through the cake. Remove the slice carefully and clean the knife before making your next cut.

For the cleanest presentation, repeat the warm-water and cleaning process between slices.

This is especially helpful with frosted and filled cakes where icing can build up on the knife.

Cutting Larger Round Cakes

Large cakes are much easier to portion when they’re cut systematically instead of simply cutting traditional wedges from the center.

For an oversized round cake, begin by cutting an inner circle several inches from the outside edge. Cut the outer ring into individual portions first.

After the outside ring has been served, continue working toward the center of the cake.

This method produces more consistent portions and helps prevent oversized slices.

Another Method for Large Cakes

Depending on the cake’s size and design, you can also cut the cake into long sections and then divide those sections into individual rectangular servings.

This technique is particularly useful when serving a larger number of guests because it creates more uniform portions than traditional triangular slices.

Serving Your Cake

For the best flavor and texture, follow any storage and serving instructions provided with your particular Downriver Cakes order.

Some cakes and fillings may require refrigeration, while others may be best served closer to room temperature.

Because ingredients and decorations can vary from cake to cake, follow the instructions provided with your individual order whenever they differ from this general guide.

Save Those Leftovers!

If you have cake remaining after your celebration, protect the exposed cake from air and store it appropriately for the ingredients used in your particular cake.

Individual pieces can also be wrapped separately for convenient portions later.
